Gum Diseases in Children

Some of us have a doubt if children get gum diseases. It is a popular myth that children only get bad tooth decay and their gums are not affected. The truth is children can very well be affected by gum diseases. Studies indicate that though not severe like adults, children do get gum diseases albeit in lesser degrees. Gingivitis is more commonly found in children like any adults.

Symptoms of Gum Diseases in Children

Bad Breath

If your children are brushing, flossing and rinsing their mouth thoroughly and still if you observe that there is a persistent bad breath, there could be chances of a gum disease. Since this is a strong probability, we suggest you take your child to your dentist.

Bleeding Gums

Sometimes you may notice the gums of your children bleeding. This may happen when they are brushing or flossing their teeth. A bleeding gum may also be a sign of a gum disease. Sometimes bleeding might happen if they are using a completely new toothbrush or sometimes if they have flossed hard with the thread. Just rule out these possibilities before assuming it to be a gum disease.

Swollen Gums

Look out if there is any swelling on the gums of your child’s teeth. A swelling can be not only due to any gum disease but also because of a cyst.

Color of the Gum

We are aware that healthy gums are pink in color. If you find your children’s gum to be red in colour then that can also be an indication that all is not well with their gums.

Preventing Gum Diseases in Children

Gum diseases can be prevented in children. As a matter of fact, when we take steps to prevent gum diseases, we prevent cavities from happening too. They both are absolutely intertwined.
