How to avoid tooth decay and reverse the process of tooth decay?

Tooth decay is a process by which the teeth begin to develop cavities or holes over a period of time. If tooth decay as a process is not stopped, cavities formed as a result can end up completely damaging the tooth. Did you know that the tooth decay process can not only be completely eliminated but the decay caused can also be reversed? Let us dig more.

What Causes Tooth Decay?

To understand how tooth decay can be reversed, we need to understand the factors that cause tooth decay in the first place. Our oral area has hundreds of varieties of bacteria and they are found in millions. The food we eat can stick to our teeth or gums or tongue and these bacteria act on them. The activities of the bacteria cause them to release acid and this acid damages the enamel coating on the teeth. Normally, the remineralizing process happens where the calcium and phosphorous present in saliva (as a result of nutrients from food), helps in repairing the damaged enamel layer. But when the acid attack is overwhelming, then the remineralization process may not be sufficient and this imbalance leads to tooth decay.

Look out for white spots on the teeth. These spots are where the enamel has undergone a layer removal and they are vulnerable to developing further into tooth decay. It is at this stage that tooth decay can be reversed.
