Gum Contouring

What is Gum Contouring?

For some the gums may be either too low on the teeth line, making the teeth less visible ( gummy smile), or may be too high on the teeth, making them look full of teeth ( gum recession). A smile would not be aesthetically appealing in such cases. Hence patients with this condition may seek to restore the gums for a perfect setting on their teeth line and such a surgery is termed Gum Contouring. The procedure also goes by other terms like Gum Sculpting or Gum Reshaping.

What Would Cause The Gum to Either be Too Low or Too High?

- In case the Gum is too low and making the teeth less visible, it is more to do with genetics. Hence this condition is by birth. Sometimes this condition can also be caused due to any medical condition or some drugs.

- In case the Gum is too high, the most probable reason is, the Gums have receded due to periodontal diseases. This recession of Gums can cause exposure of the root of the tooth which is not good for the stability of the teeth.

How is Gum Contouring done?

For Teeth with More Gums

The gum contouring for a mouth that has excess gum is done by a dentist. The contouring is done by either scalpels or laser. The procedures carried out using a laser is advanced. But before the contouring is done the gums are cleaned and plaque is removed.

The laser is used to reshape and remove excess tissue in the gum. It is also used to seal the exposed tissue thereby stopping the bleeding process. Laser contouring has more advantages since the cutting of the tissue are less.

For Teeth with Receded Gumline

The receded gum poses a challenge to fill. Modern methods use grafts to seal the teeth and create protective gum layer. The common method used to treat receded gumline is to pull a flap of skin from the roof of the mouth (called palate). The tissue so removed is stitched back to the gum tissue where the root is exposed due to the receded gumline. This grafting method effectively closes the exposed gums.
