Dental Implants and Dentures – A Comparison on Eating and Nutrition

Oral health does affect the rest of your body.  If you have missing teeth or if most of your teeth are missing, you may not be able to eat meat, raw vegetables, and other foods that are important to your well-being. In other words, your body may not be getting the required nutrition and hence the overall health is impacted.

While dentures can make things a tad easier, dental implants win hands down. There are limitations to what you can do with dentures but there exists no such limitations when you have dental implants.

Limitations of Dentures

  • Dentures might slip when you are chewing on hard foods or foods that are difficult to chew
  • In the event of denture slipping, food particles might get caught underneath the dentures. If the dentures are not washed properly, the decaying food particles can come in contact with the gum layer and can cause irritation to the gum. If left untreated this can cause gum diseases.
  • The roof of the mouth too has taste buds. So it may not be possible to fully relish the food you are eating when you are wearing upper dentures. Because upper dentures have a plate-like structure that covers the roof of the mouth.
  • More importantly, foods like meat that are rich in protein, green leafy vegetables are difficult to chew with dentures. This can have a direct bearing on the nutrition status of an individual.

Advantages of Dental Implants

  • Unlike dentures, dental implants never slip.
  • You can also chew on hard food or any type of food for that matter without any hassles.
  • Since there is no plate-like structure that covers the upper roof of the mouth in case of dental implants, you can relish the food you are eating thoroughly.
  • With dental implants you can eat any type of food and hence your nutrition status is not compromised under any circumstances.

So if you are edentulous (a condition where no teeth are present) either in the upper jaw or lower jaw, or both, consider getting all-on-4 dental implants or all-on-6 dental implants. Because dental implants are always a better option than dentures.
