Is it safe to get Dental Implants while pregnant?

Advancements in dental implant technology have revolutionized the field of dentistry over the past few decades. With newer scientific breakthroughs and clinical implementations, dental implants have gotten better than ever by becoming safer and easier to get.  Dental Implant serves as a replacement for a tooth and its root. Is it safe for pregnant women to get dental implants? Let us understand.

Usually, pregnant women are not advised to undergo dental implants or any dental treatments unless it is an emergency. Dental Implant therapy is recommended by dentists only as urgent or emergency procedure. Severe tooth degradation might mandate tooth removal or tooth extraction. This is because keeping a severely decayed tooth can probably put stress on the fetus due to the excruciating pain a decayed tooth can give to the mother.

Dental implants consist of three components. A lower component is a titanium screw which fixes into the jaw bone. The upper components consist of fixtures like crowns, bridges or dentures. The middle component is called an abutment, which serves as a connector between the upper and lower component. Dental implants are made of bio-compatible materials so that the human body doesn’t reject the Implant.

General Procedures in getting Dental Implants

As a part of the pre-implant procedures, the patients are asked to take radiograms and CT scans.  These tests are done to ensure the precise placement of the Dental Implant. This requires the patient to get radiographs and CT scans, which can be harmful to the fetus. That is why dental implants are generally not indicated for pregnant women. Moreover, the placement of a dental implant is a surgical procedure in itself.

The first and third trimester of pregnancy is important periods for the development of the fetus. Another parameter to factor is anesthesia. During the Implant, procedure anesthesia is used to numb the pain. Studies show that anesthesia is safe but it is still safer if avoided. Stress and anxiety is another factor that can affect the development of the fetus. It should also be noted that pregnant women will be under medications also which might put them under more stress if they are getting dental implants.

Considering all the parameters it is best to say that getting dental implants while being pregnant is not the best option unless if it is an emergency or urgent procedure. If it is not an emergency procedure, dental implants are not recommended for pregnant women.
